Police are holding a boy accused of hacking his mother with a machete in Elburgon, Nakuru County.
The woman sustained serious injuries in her head following the attack by the 15-year-old yesterday.
The mother had questioned why her son had kept off school only weeks after joining Form One.
“He only attended classes in January and has since been idling around home. I have provided him with everything but he has refused to continue with his studies,” she said.
The mother said a quarrel erupted after she demanded that he explains why he was unwilling to go school.
“He later asked that he goes to our neighbour’s house to watch television but I denied him permission since he had angered me. He then went to the kitchen and picked a machete and club,” she said.
The boy told his mother he would use the weapons to access the school in the night and bring home the books that she bought for him.
“I was shocked at the sudden change of behaviour and calmed him down. I warned him against going to school in the night as it would be dangerous for him. In the process, he struck me in the head with the machete,” she said.
Neighbours rescued the woman and rushed her to Nyayo Hospital in Elburgon town.
Area Chief Bethwel Kibe said the mother of five had high hopes in her last born, before he turned truant.
“It is a shocking incident that the boy turned violent against his mother over his own education. The family has a humble background and the mother had high hopes in him. The police have taken up the matter,” he said Kibe.
The principal of the secondary school said they are yet to establish why the boy left the school as he had no cases of indiscipline.
