Unlike what most people think, there are a number of jobs in a radio station other than a presenter. This is because there’s so much more to the world of radio besides the voice you hear behind a microphone. As we celebrate World Radio Day today, 13th February, here is a list of the careers one can pursue when joining radio station.
Head of Radio
This person basically is in charge of all the operations that go on in a radio station. He/she is involved in all the planning, strategies implemented and how the station is runned.
Radio presenters
Most people know about them. These are the people who have an on air position in the radio broadcasting.
Programs controller
He/she is in charge of the talent, that is, the people hired on the radio station and also in charge of the content that runs through the radio.
News anchors
Just like in a television station, radio has its own news anchors. These people read the general hard news and gives updates of what is going on around the world.
News Editor
This person goes through the raw news collected on ground and edits it before it is presented on air.
News producers/reporter
These people are involved in the overall packing of news. They go to the ground and gather information of what is going on. The information collected can be news or feature stories.
Music director
He/she implements the music policy in a radio station. Determines what will be played on air and what will not pass.
Traffic controller
This person is in charge of the radio inventory. That is, what is transmitted on the radio whether news or commercial content.
Producers
There are two types of producers; one the creative producer who deals with the sound and recording and the content producer who is in charge of research and providing content for the presenters.
Copywriter
This person serves the commercial needs for radio. He/she comes up with creative ideas on promotions for both the product (radio) and the client.
Social media personnel
In the era of a digital world, the social media personnel are in charge of what is posted on the social media platforms for the radio. This can either be the shows or doing the radio campaigns. They also listen to what their customers have to say online and give feedback as well.
Brand manager
This person basically promotes the brand identity for the radio station.
Technical staff
They are in charge of the radio frequencies.
IT personnel
They are in charge of the software for radio broadcast.
Customer care
These people deal with the customers/clients by listening to the complaints and offering solutions. They also decide how winners get their prizes during the radio promotions.
