Police in Emali, Makueni County have netted 6180 rolls of bhang with a street value of over Sh3 million while on transit from Nairobi to Mombasa.
The consignment was bundled in a Toyota Saloon car that had been designed to carry a large capacity of the narcotic drug.
Makueni Administration Police Commander Joseph Ole Naipeiyan said the bhang was confiscated past Emali town after the occupants of vehicle refused to stop when they were flagged down by police patrolling the highway.
“Emali police were carrying out daily patrols along the busy highway when they noticed a suspecting vehicle. They stopped it but the driver sped off approaching Mombasa direction, something that prompted police to chase them,” said Naipeiyan.
He disclosed that after a 5-kilometer chase, the occupants of the car abandoned it besides the highway and fled.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the three escaping suspects.
The vehicle has been towed to Emali Police Station with immediate search for the owner of the vehicle from National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) commencing.
However, a mobile phone found in the car will be handed over to Safaricom to enable retrieval of the call data register, according to the police boss.
“We will make a search with NTSA of the rightful owner of the car. As for the phone, we will give it to Safaricom to retrieve the call data register”, he added.
On January 4, police in Makindu within the same highway confiscated a car transporting drugs worth Sh 1 million.
