Strathmore University is among four new power producers who will start contributing energy to the national grid after a deal signed Thursday.
Kwale International Sugar Company at the Coast also signed a 20-year deal to sell power to the national grid alongside Mt Kenya based organisation, a women community based organisation (CBO), and Ndanyat Power limited.
According to the power purchase agreements signed with Kenya Power, the four will supply an additional 20.8 Megawatts from renewable sources – biomass, solar, mini-hydro and wind micro plants located at the coast, Nairobi, Kajiado and Meru.
“Such renewable sources of energy will progressively reduce over reliance of fossil fuel which in turn, will further reduce the cost of electricity to customers and the economy at large,” Kenya Power Chief Executive Ben Chumo said on Thursday.
