St Kevin Hill Academy Nyali in Mombasa County posted sterling results in this year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam, with its top candidate Mercy Nyaboke scoring 437 marks out of the possible 500.
In anticipation of better results this year, the school had erected a wall and painted it with the inscription 'No 1 School in Kenya'.
When The Standard visited the school yesterday, painters were putting final touches on the wall as a handful of students and parents trickled in to receive the results.
When we finally tracked down Nyaboke, she had travelled with her mother, Ms Jane Maheba who is a teacher at Mombasa's Kongowea Primary School, to Nyakoe village in Kisii County.
"God blessed me with these results. Then there were my teachers and mother who ensured I got the necessary support to excel in class," said an elated Nyaboke.
Nyaboke, who aspires to be a pilot, said she was contented with the results and thanked her mother for pushing her to improve her grade in Mathematics.
Another candidate at the same school, Marvin Kimanzi (pictured), 14, who scored 432 marks, said he was excited that he had achieved his goal.
"I am happy with the results. I was able to get more than what I had targeted, that is 430 marks and above," said Kimanzi who hopes to join Mang'u High School and be a pilot.
The school, which had 22 candidates this year, attained a mean score of 420.8 compared to 422 in 2013.
Out of the total number of candidates, there were 14 boys and seven girls.
St Kevin Group of Schools Director Kevin Nyongesa said all pupils scored more than 400 marks, with the lowest score being 405.
