Egerton University has been closed down indefinitely following a student riot at the institution on Saturday night.
The the univesity's senate also suspended end of year examinations, which were set to begin tomorrow.
In a circular signed by the university's Registrar of Academics Seth Owido, the students were given three hours to leave. "The senate has decided that the university be closed indefinitely. Students are advised to clear campus before 5pm," read the circular, which also ordered the closure of the Nakuru town and Nairobi campuses.
The students went on a rampage, destroying property worth millions of shillings over what they described as "punitive" examination rules imposed by the university administration.

They set the university's business centre ablaze, and the inferno also consumed structures next to a newly constructed, multi-million shilling ultra-modern hostel before it was put out by firefighters from Nakuru.
"If it were not for these fire officers, the destruction could have been immense. It appears they could have set more structures on fire," an anti-riot officer, who requested anonymity, told The Standard.
Agnes Kahuia, a businesswoman, said she lost over Sh1.5 million during the riot after her shop was looted.
Njoro OCPD Fredrick Lai said police arrested 10 students and will arraign them in court once investigations are over.
According to students who spoke to The Standard, the university administration released a notice last week, demanding that students with fee balances clear them before they sit the end of semester examinations.
