Nairobi, Kenya: Students of a secondary school in Nairobi have been sent home following heavy flooding that affected their institution after rains that were experienced in the city.

 Embakasi Girls Secondary School with more than 600 students was closed on Saturday morning after the management declared it was impossible to keep the students there.

Principal Nancy Mutahi said their laboratory, dormitory, classes and other facilities were badly affected by the flooding.

"All emergency service providers responded but they could not help much and we decided to close until further notice. Only form four students will remain," said Ms Mutahi.

She added students books were damaged by the flooding at the school that is run by the County Government of Nairobi.

The rains also affected traffic flow on major roads.
