KENYA: Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) has demanded information on role played by International Foundation for Electoral Systems (Ifes) in the procurement of materials used in the March 4 General Election.

EACC in a letter to Ifes wants to be given a brief on institution’s role in procurement of poll materials.

Documents EACC has sought from IFES include those relating to procurement of Biometric Voter Registration(BVR) kits and accessories, Electronic Voter Identification Devices(EVID), results transmission system and voter education materials.

“As you are aware, the commission is investigating allegations of irregular procurement of election equipment, materials and legal services for the March 4 General Election. To facilitate our investigations, please urgently furnish us with the following original documents with regard to procurement of BVR kits and accessories, EVID, results transmission system and voter materials,” reads the letter from EACC to Ifes chief of party dated June 19.

The letter signed by Abdi Mohammed, for CEO EACC, also asked for report or minutes on the pre-bidding conference for the tenders, where IFES may have played the role of observer.

The investigation follows the failure of EVID kits and presidential results transmission system during the March 4 elections.

Ifes is also required to supply documents on any payments it might have received regarding the procurements of the materials.

Ifes stated that it provided technical advice to IEBC.
