Nairobi, Kenya: Workers at the Kenyatta National Hospital went on a go-slow on Wednesday, paralysing operations at the referral facility.

The over 4,000 workers have threatened to go on strike today to demand Sh1.3 billion in salary increases and allowances.

The hospital management led by the CEO Richard Lesiyampe held a meeting with union representatives, but no agreement was reached and the workers vowed to down their tools if their demands are not met.

The patients bore the brunt of the strike, with those admitted at the hospital going without food as kitchen staff had also joined the strike.

Mr Simon Muriithi, who had brought in a patient, noted that there were a few doctors and nurses attending to patients.

Daniel Omoga, the secretary of the union, pointed out that the hospital had ignored all previous notices that the staff issued on an impending strike.

KNH’s Communication Officer and Spokesman Simon Ithae said on Tuesday that the Treasury had not released the funds.
