Baringo, Kenya: Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has dismissed MPs agitating for salary increment and challenged them to have the interests of the electorate at heart.

Gideon said legislators should not seek higher salaries that will be a burden to taxpayers.

Speaking at Kisanana in Baringo County, he opposed the controversial debate by legislators, terming it useless and time wasting.

“The increment of MPs’ salaries at the time the country is faced with financial challenges is unrealistic and should be rejected by everybody who loves this country,” said Gideon.

He said a move by legislators to oppose Senate to allocate Sh48 billion more to county governments above the Sh210 billion that the National Treasury had earmarked for the devolved units was an indicator that they were not after the interest of the common mwananchi.

“How do you reject public money that would have directly benefited the electorate and pretend to increase your own salaries? he posed.

Senators approved the increase when they amended the Division of Revenue Bill, thus raising the shareable revenue among counties from Sh210 billion to Sh258 billion.

He warned MPs not to misuse their constitutional powers to arm-twist hardworking Kenyans in order to achieve their selfish interests.
