Nairobi, Kenya:  The number of people who were injured in a grenade attack in Nairobi’s Majengo area on Sunday night has risen to four.

This was after a fourth female victim was found admitted to a local hospital where she was rushed moments after the attack on Sunday at about 8.30pm.

Other victims were attended to at the Kenyatta National Hospital and are in stable condition. Some were treated and discharged, according to hospital officials.

Head of Bomb Disposal Unit Eliud Langat said preliminary findings show the grenade that was used in the attack was manufactured in Russia.

He added they are “analysing the debris collected from the scene to establish if they are linked to the past ones used in similar incidents”.

“We have also established that the blast in Likoni, Mombasa was caused by a similar grenade, which is an indication that the same group was behind it. We do not know yet how they come here,” said Langat.

Nairobi PPO Benson Kibui said they are still pursuing the attackers who escaped in a saloon car.

“Witnesses say one of them was a woman and they were in a car whose registration numbers we have. We hope to get them soon,” he said.

Meanwhile, worshippers of the attacked Earthquake Miracle Ministries church in Mombasa were among those grilled by police Monday.

Treated patients

Likoni OCPD Abbagaro Guyo said the worshippers who were at the crusade when the grenade was hurled at the crowd recorded statements with police in relation to the attack.

“No arrest has been made so far but we have statements of eyewitnesses including the victims to help with investigations,” said Guyo.

Coast Provincial General Hospital Chief Administrator Dr Bernard Mwero said they treated 15 patients who had sustained soft tissue injuries and by Monday afternoon, all of them had been discharged.

Nairobi and Mombasa have been quiet for almost six months and the Sunday attacks are the latest in a string of grenade blasts or shootings to have hit Kenya, although it was not immediately clear if the two attacks were connected.

Police have previously blamed similar grenade attacks on supporters or members of Somalia’s Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab insurgents.

Also, three children were killed on Sunday evening after an improvised explosive device they were playing with exploded at Madha-Libah village in Saka division, Garissa County.

Garissa County Commissioner Rashid Khator said the three aged between six and 12 died on the spot after they were ripped off by the explosive device.
