Nakuru, Kenya: Nakuru County Roads will get a major face-lift following the release of major project funds by Kenya’s development partners.
The funding is being channeled through the Kenya Transport Sector Support Project (KTSSP) by the International Development Association (IDA).
The cash will facilitate the construction of Grade Separated Interchanges a Nyahururu Turnoff, Njoro Summit Turnoff and Mau-Narok.
Consequently, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has advertised a Specific Procurement Notice in a bid to commence the works.
According to the KeNHA Manager in-charge of Corporate Communications Mr. Charles Njogu, the projects are part of long term strategy to ensure all Kenyan highways are improved.
“These interchanges are necessary in view of the rising number of vehicles plying Kenyan roads”, Njogu said in a telephone interview yesterday.
Other works to be undertaken include maintenance of existing roads, site clearance, construction of reinforced concrete and caveats.
The maintenance works will help mitigate against rising number of accidents in Nakuru County.
Njogu said good roads are a pre-requisite to development as they provide a route to the market for farm inputs, finished products and other essential suppliers.
Nyahururu is a major supplier of horticulture, floriculture, vegetables, while Njoro supplies vegetables, dairy products, carrots, potatoes among other vegetables.
In April 2013, KeNHA issued another procurement notice for the construction of Bachuma Gate -Maji ya Chumvi road. The works are being financed by the World Bank through its lending arm, IDA.
