The National Alliance presidential aspirant Uhuru Kenyatta began a tour of Turkana County, the area where his father was jailed for years before independence.

The Deputy Prime Minister will be in the region to woo the pastoralist community for three days.

On Thursday, he began the campaigns in Turkana South and East districts visiting Lokori and Lokichar areas.

Uhuru met hundreds of TNA supporters, local leaders and party aspirants and promised to fast track development in the region if elected.

He recounted development projects he had helped establish in the region.

He has funded Uhuru High School in Lokichar in Turkana South District and Lodwar Mixed School where his sister learned during the pre-colonial period. He also donated desks to children during his earlier tour of Lodwar Mixed Primary School and helped fund business enterprise for the youth in the region.

In his first meeting with local leaders, councillors and party aspirants in Lokori Baraza Park, Uhuru emphasised the need to promote girl-child education in the arid region.

He urged parents and teachers at Uhuru High School in Lokichar to embrace education.

“We need to see our children become academic giants. Allow them  to attend  school to embrace education, which is the only pillar to development of a region. Put education matters as your priority,” Uhuru said.

He decried the deplorable houses at Lokori Police Station, adding that his government would develop marginalised areas.

DPM said the priority of the citizens is to enjoy security. He said it was shocking that police officers still live in deplorable conditions despite the much-talked police reforms. He added the Government should consider building better houses for the officers to enhance security in the most marginalised region like Turkana County.

Uhuru said his development agenda is about road infrastructure, education, health and security.

The DPM said Turkana has the potential to become a food basket to avoid perennial hunger through promotion of irrigation.

The DPM will visit Lokitaung, Kakuma, Lodwar and Loima. He was accompanied by assistant minister Mwangi Kiunjuri and MPs Mike Sonko and Maisomo Leshomo among other leaders.
