Kanu National chairman Gideon Moi has said claims by Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo that the Government was funding some political parties should not be ignored.
Gideon said Mr Jirongo’s claims hold water and should not be dismissed by Kenyans.
“Jirongo should be given State security because the matter he has revealed to the public was sensitive,” he said.
At the same time, the chairman said preparations for Kanu 50th anniversary celebrations were in top gear. He said they are part of the activities aimed at revitalising the party.
“The celebrations would be in a class of its own and Presidents Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Jakaya Kikweti (Tanzania) and Silva Kiir (Southern Sudan) would attend,” he said. The former Baringo Central MP was speaking when he addressed a campaign rally at Cheptais trading centre in Mt Elgon, Bungoma County on Saturday.
Gideon held a meeting with elders from the region at Cheptais Boys high School who urged him to run for presidency on Kanu ticket.
The elders also supported former area MP Joseph Kimkung’s bid to recapture the seat in the next General Election.
Kanu Secretary General Nick Salat, Organising Secretary Abdulrahaman Bafadhil, Kimkung and party’s Rift Valley representative Jonathan Bii were present.
Gideon announced that Kanu grassroots and national elections would be held in August.
He said Kanu had taken root in the country contrary to claims by rivals that the party was not strong.
“How can a party that has been in power for 24 years lose popularity. We are still strong and those who underrate Kanu would be surprised with the renewed vigour we would face the elections with,” he added.
Mr Salat said all candidates on the Kanu ticket would go through nomination. “All candidates running on Kanu ticket including the chairman and I would be subjected to nomination process,” he added.
