Police are holding a woman after she was found in possession of a hand grenade casing, three pistols and 51 bullets in Nairobi’s Zimmerman area.

Detectives were hoping to arrest the husband of the woman but reportedly missed him narrowly after he escaped the dragnet.

The officers involved in the operation said they had trailed the man from Mombasa where he allegedly planned to commit a crime.

Police have lauched a manhunt for the man.

Nairobi Area police boss Anthony Kibuchi said they are interrogating the woman before they take any action on her.

"We have since discovered that it was a grenade casing and a not a live one. Inside it were 51 rounds of ammunition." Kibuchi clarfied.

“We believe they were planning to commit a crime, either a robbery or terrorism if this explosive was to be used,” said Kibuchi.

Detectives from the Flying Squad unit raided the couple's house in Rurii area on Tuesday evening. All the recovered pistols were Ceska.

Grenades have of late been used in attacks in Nairobi,Mombasa and North Eastern since Kenyan  troops crossed to Somalia to hunt down terror group Al-Shabaab. Security agencies are struggling to contain the attacks that many believe are being staged by the remnants of the terror group who are in Kenya.

Elsewhere in the city, a gang stormed into a gym along Mombasa Road and attacked about 20 people who were training robbing them of their valuables and cash.

A man was shot and seriously wounded in the attack and is admitted in hospital in a stable condition.

The victim is said to have been shot by police who were responding to the scene after they started to shoot on hearing gunshots from the gym.

The six gunmen struck as those inside were busy training before ordering them to lie down and robbed them of the valuables.

They reportedly stole all the clothes belonging to those who were in session before escaping.

Witnesses say the thugs escaped while shooting randomly after realizing police had been alerted. No arrest has been made so far but police say they are hunting down the gang.

The Tuesday evening incident caused panic as the trainees ran out of the gym screaming for help long after the gang had left.
