The supply of electricity by Kenya Power to Mt Kenya South region was interruptedafter two major lines collapsed over the weekend.

The region, which comprises Thika, Kagundo, Gatundu and their environs have as a result been engulfed in darkness.
On Sunday evening, Engineer Benson Muriithi, the chief manager in charge of distribution, said the main lines connecting the region from Tana Power Station collapsed following heavy rains and vandalism.

He said efforts to restore supply have also been hampered by persistent rain and strong winds.
In addition, he said accessibility to the affected areas has also been difficult.

“We have had to hire a Kenya Wildlife Service helicopter to transport materials to the affected places,” he said, as he led his staff to erect the lines in Murera area of Ruiru.

The engineer said the stability of the lines had also been affected by quarry activities and added that a notice to vacate the way leave would be issued and legal action taken against those who fail to comply.

He further said that children had interfered with power lines as they have broken the glass insulators with catapults.
“There seems to be a sport among the children around here that entails hitting the glass insulators with catapults,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Muriithi said they had sought for alternative supply of power to vital parts of the region. He called on the public to help safeguard the lines.
