The United States has issued a security alert for its citizens in Tanzania.

The U.S. embassy in Tanzania cautioned Americans from frequenting areas populated by westerners in Dar es Salaam and other regions within the East African country.

"Locations frequented by U.S. citizens and other Westerners in Dar es Salaam and elsewhere in Tanzania continue to be attractive targets to terrorists planning to conduct attacks. Terrorist groups could attack with little or no warning, targeting hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls and markets, police stations, places of worship and others," the embassy wrote.

Americans are advised to keep a low profile, be alert to their surroundings, and always practice security measures.

"U.S. citizens who travel abroad should always have a contingency plan for emergency situations," said the U.S. embassy.

In 2021, a terrorist killed four people - three police officers and a private security guard in Dar es Salaam.

The officers were manning the French Embassy's guardhouse.
