Government working on policy to scale up fight against corruption

NAIROBI, KENYA: President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the Attorney General and the Department of Justice, the National Treasury and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to develop a national policy to fight graft.

The comprehensive national ethics and anti-corruption policy, whose report is expected by the end of this year, aims at fighting corruption at the grassroots level.

Speaking during the launch of a five-year strategic plan by the EACC, Uhuru noted that the current level of corruption needed some tweaking of policy framework.

“It is now generally accepted that to win the war against corruption on a lasting basis, we need a transformation of our attitudes.  We need to promote and build a society that believes in integrity as a key pillar of their nationhood,” he said.

“This, I say because I am more than convinced to win this war, we must start from the beginning, we must start with young people at the kindergarten level, and build on them from scratch,” he said.

“Going forward, I am directing the Attorney General and the Department of Justice, the National Treasury and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to embark on the development of this holistic policy (comprehensive national ethics and anti-corruption policy).”

As part of the task, the bodies should also develop, within the same time frame, proposals for the review and strengthening of the anti-corruption and ethics legal framework in line with Kenya’s medium term priorities.
