Maseno University scales down student's campaigns period to 5 days

Maseno University is set for this year's student’s elections to be held on September 12 and 13th at its main campus in Kisumu.
According to a notice issued on the university website, aspirants for SOMU posts are required to submit their nomination papers to the electoral body managing the student’s polls by August 26, 2016 when the current executive council shall be dissolved rendering all posts vacant.
This comes as the institution's Vice Chancellor announces implementation of the government directive to have all ethnic based groups disbanded across learning institutions.
Speaking to first year students during their orientation on Friday at the varsity graduation square, the Vice Chancellor Professor Julius Nyabundi said all tribal groups bound to being radical and divisive had been deregistered.
"The groups have been done away with as they were potential grounds for breeding unrest and intensifying tribalism which the government has expressed commitment against and we have to support this course," said Professor Nyabundi.
The notice issued on Monday, August 22 indicated that aspirants shall be allowed to campaign for five days, starting from September 5th to 10th.

Polls for the executive directors and congress persons for the union will be held on 12th September, separately from presidential polls scheduled for September 13th at the Kisumu main campus.
Elect student leaders will be subsequently announced and later sworn in by the institution's legal officer on 14th September at the graduation square.
During the 2015 student campaigns, a first year nursing student died sparking unrest and intolerance among students that forced the university council to suspend the semester for a month spilling it over to January this year due to the indefinite closure on 13th November 2015.
