President Uhuru Kenyatta uses ID card as travel document in trip to Uganda

19th February, 2014

President Uhuru Kenyatta today used his national identity card to travel to neighbouring uganda in a move aimed at encouraging cross border travel. The use of identity cards for travel within the EAC took effect last month with Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda citizens readily taking advantage of the new requirement. Kenyans and Rwandese use the national ids while their Ugandan counterparts use their voting cards. In Kigali, Rwanda, President Paul Kagame too used his national id to travel to Kampala, Uganda. The common market protocol provides for the use of a machine readable national identity card for travel within the EAC, but only for citizens of those partner states that have accepted the use of such cards among themselves. The president is in Uganda to attend an EAC summit to discuss the progress made in the implementation of the joint visa between Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda
