After weeks of speculation regarding the status of former journalist Kimani Mbugua having relapsed, former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who initially took him to a rehabilitation centre last year, has given him a second chance.

The flamboyant politician took to the socials to express his disappointment on the development and had members from his Sonko Rescue Team, trace the ailing journalist.

“He was found in Makongeni estate, Thika, Kiambu county. He was brought to our headquarters, where we are currently overseeing his well-being after providing him with new clothing and allowing him to take a refreshing shower,” he shared.

The politician went ahead and engaged him in what he called an extensive counselling session and decided to offer him a second chance.

Sonko stated that given Kimani’s current condition, plans to fly him to Mombasa were put aside and instead, he will be driven back to the Mombasa Women's Rehabilitation Centre today.

“I have chosen not to involve Kimani's family at this stage, but I will ensure that he remains at the rehabilitation centre. Upon his full recovery, he will have the opportunity to work there, similarly to Conjestina Achieng, who has been discharged and offered a position to provide counselling services at the center,” Sonko intimated.

The former Governor and Nairobi Senator who was celebrating Eid, took Kimani in where he gave him a bag of new clothes and dressed him up in a Kanzu and keffiyeh before having a meal.

Sonko requested that they also not release him until he was well again during a phone call with an official at the rehab centre, with Sonko also speaking to former boxing champion Conjestina Achieng, who is also being treated at the facility.

Sonko also revealed that after his previous intervention for three journalists, it has been a bit of sweet and sour moment for his efforts.

“Former NTV journalist Eunice Omollo, who was admitted to Mathari Mental Hospital alongside Kimani and later transferred to the Mombasa Women's Rehabilitation Centre, is now employed at K24 TV. Recently, she produced two documentaries—one focusing on tuberculosis and the other on World Bipolar Day. This is a positive development, as she has successfully returned to her profession,” he shared.

Sonko however feels let down by the other two, Kimani Mbugua and Nasibo Kabale.

“In contrast, there is a concerning case involving Nabala Nasibo, who resumed heavy drinking after being discharged from rehabilitation. Therefore, I am committed to ensuring that Kimani receives the necessary care and support for his full recovery,” he added.
