Celebrities high on 'anxiety' as MCSK Awards gala closes in

Singer Gloria Muliro

Currently, Jaguar’s latest release One Centimetre is among the most played songs on radio. Thanks to his signature tune and simplicity, the celebrated star seems to have won over the hearts of many radio listeners who are ever requesting for the track. The song is loved by the young and the old and it cuts across urban and rural fans, most of who sing the song word for word.

This year has seen many artistes releasing hit tracks that are creating a lot of competition and radio presenters are spoilt for choice.

Radio play is usually monitored by MCSK, which is responsible for paying royalties to the intellectual property owners and it will be during Monday’s MCSK Awards gala that the biggest earners will be awarded with the overall winner taking home a six-figure cash prize.

Statistics do show that Collo’s 254 theme song, Gloria Muliro and Willy Paul’s Sitolia, P Unit’s (featuring Collo) You Guy (Dat Dendai), Redsan’s Badda than Most and Sauti Sol’s Still the One were among the most played songs on Capital FM and Homeboyz radio for the best part of 2014.

Ghetto FM has played P-Unit’s (featuring Collo) You Guy (Dat Dendai), Gloria Muliro and Willy Paul’s Sitolia, Jaguar’s Matapeli, DNA’s Maswali ya Police and Nonini’s Kila Mmoja (featuring Chege and Lady Bee) as some of their listeners’ favourites, the same songs that seem to have carried the day on One FM and Q FM.

Amelina’s Why, Victor Mbuvi’s Kwata Kawaya, Calvo Mistari’s Lose Control joins You Guy (Dat Dendai) and Matapeli to make some of the most played songs on Kiss 100.

Gloria Muliro, Willy Paul, Daddy Owen and Victor Mbuvi lead in KBC while James Maina Karanja, P Unit, Collo and Jaguar emerge the highest earners for songs played at Royal Media Services.

Standard Group Media has turned Dennis Kaggia aka DNA into the best royalties-earner for his Maswali ya Polisi hit with Sauti Sol (Still the One) and Cannibal (My City My Town) following closely.

In the MCSK report that Pulse saw exclusively, Amelina (Why), Sarah K (Liseme) and Octopizzo (Ivo Ivo) happen to be the most played artistes on Radio Africa generally while Sanaipei Tande (I Wish), Shiro wa GP (Agiginyani) and Angela Chibalonza’s Ebeneza emerged top at Nation Media.

Besides artistes getting their songs played on local urban stations, other stations, some of them vernacular stations have been broadcasting a more diverse playlist. The fact that a song has been popular among urban radio listeners does not mean it is the most played across radio stations countrywide.

“You will be so shocked to learn that we have artistes whose songs are quite popular on vernacular radio stations and this makes those artistes the kings of those regions,” the MCSK CEO Maurice Okoth told Pulse.

“That is why the overall winner of the year may not necessarily be one of the top performers in the said categories,” remarked Maurice.

“Among foreign artistes Diamond’s Kesho, Chameleone’s Valu Valu and Lady Jay D’s Yahaya emerged top,” he added.

The MCSK awards will be held at Carnivore grounds on Monday starting 2pm and with the theme, Celebrating Kenya, the spectacular performances will capture a Kenya @ 50 feel.
