While visiting Nairobi to mark the World Refugee Day on Tuesday, UNHCR special envoy Angelina Jolie spoke about sexual violence and gave out a warning on the vice being carried out by the military especially in war-torn areas.
“The role of sexual violence is compounded when it is carried out by someone in uniform who has taken an oath to protect,” Angelina said.
“So it is a responsibility of those who wear uniform to take the lead now by correcting from within, setting an example and stepping forward with new commitments,” she noted.
During the visit, the movie star visited girls at the Heshima Safe House, a home that houses girls who have fled conflict mostly from Congo, South Sudan, Somali and Burundi and some of whom have experienced sexual and gender-based violence.
