Parents never dressed young kids to look sexy

The campaigns are heating up across the 47 counties.

I am however interested in the race for women representatives — where the womenfolk are busy combing every inch of the country in search of votes. This they do beautifully.

My attention has been drawn to numerous campaign posters donning every available space in the city. Interestingly, one can tell that the race has been reduced to a ‘socialites contest,’ especially where young women are involved.

A lady — whom I believe has seen this shocking trend — commented thus: “It’s hard to comprehend what ladies really want. They say that they don’t want to be sexualised, but are at the forefront acting the part”. Imagine this coming from a lady!

I will refer most of my arguments from a post by Oluseye Igbafe. It’s actually a question. It goes thus: “Are we sexualising our kids?”

Now, this begins from the way we dress our kids. One wonders why we dress our young girls in skimpy dresses. Why dress a nine-year-old to look sexy and hot? A few parents will even introduce them to wigs, manicure and tights. Really!?

Boys on the other hand are introduced to expensive haircuts, sagging pants, and expensive sneakers.

Tights, fitting trousers were actually a taboo back in our days — you would never meet a young lady wrapped up in tights.

This nonsense of daughters putting on tights in front of their father and uncles was not allowed. When the girl was home, she had to be in a leso. There were no weaves, all ladies had to do was press their hair using hot iron combs. Use of hot combs was only done when the girl was around the age of 16 — and during Christmas.

I have said here before, that my mother was my official barber. In fact, the first time I sought the services of a professional barber was when I was in college. One time, she found that I had tried to shave my hair in a style called Ray Parker. She laughed and sent me to the drawer to come with a pair of scissors.

As Oluseye puts it, “If you allow a child to wear bum shorts in the house — at age of three — why do you expect her to wear long skirts when she hits 18 years? It is sad that even when going to church, we dress our girls in sexy clothes. What happened to the fear of God? If we don’t inculcate the fear of God now, how do we expect them to behave when they grow up?

You will find parents cheering their kids as they dance to crazy music — in sexy style. Yet when they grow up and start spending time party-hopping and twerking, you start complaining!

See, this is why our children have no shame. Many of them will post nude photos on social media and enjoy every minute of it. To them, it’s normal. You can tell by the number of nude videos and pictures hitting the internet every week that ours is a sad situation. Unfortunately, no one seems bothered, and neither do they lose sleep. We allow our girls to have up to four earrings at age nine, then we blame them when as adults they pierce any part of the skin that is available.

We as parents allow our boys to listen to vulgar rap music which demean women. A kind of music that teaches our boys that money is everything — which is why many kids today join gangs like Gaza.

Many others end up being hackers or tenderpreneurs, with their motto being ‘money is everything’. Parents should stop pampering kids. Dress your kids in those flower dresses that make them look like little angels. The hairstyle should be simple also. The boy should be shaved without any styles and if possible, make them use the oguaro comb.
