Sacho High School recently came into the limelight after news of its Sh20 million commercial water bottling venture was made public.

The history of Sacho, however, began with retired President Daniel arap Moi establishing it along Kabarnet-Tenges-Eldama Ravine Road in Baringo County in 1982 as a mixed boarding school.

The school, sponsored by African Inland Church (AIC), is nestled in a forested area. Swimming is a hobby and strict Christian principles reign supreme. Closing day was a much-awaited affair that saw students waiting by the gate to hear the principal roar: “I declare the school officially closed!” before running out like bats out of hell to board matatus for home.

The unlucky ones were those who scored Cs and below, condemning them to holiday tuition. But night studies ended with some students sliding from class to dorms via butts on guard rails, which sometimes went awry: Torn trousers, skirts or even butts!

Notable alumni who wore red cardigans, white blouses and red skirts and kicked blankets off at 3am to chew books include  the 2016 Miss Tourism Africa, Jacqueline Jeruto Komen and geologist Daisy Jepkemoi. Male students wore red pullovers, gray trousers and white shirts, including David Chelimo, athlete for Colby University USA and Evans Tuitoek, athlete for Texas Technical University USA.

Others guided by the motto, ‘Be Mindful of Others’ are Dr Noah Chepkoech, founder of African Institute of Research and Development Studies, Joshua Komen a lecturer at Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, Vashti Lechuta, Hansard officer at the defunct Commission for the Implementation of Constitution, and Anthony Chesang, a KenGen employee who was awarded an outstanding distinction master’s degree by Leeds University, UK.

Others who recall riding in the aging Leyland bus by day and sleeping at Ruwenzori and Kilimanjaro dormitories at night include Faith Tuikong, senior pharmacist at Kenyatta National Hospital, Fredrick Kirui, business manager at Standard Group, Eva Silong, account executive at Gina Din and Peter Kapkiai, second officer at KQ.

Others are Ledishah Kipseii of Ledishah JK Kittony & Co. Advocates, Tubei Bernard, consultant engineer at Liaison Group, Timothy Kipkemoi, reporter at CMTV Kenya, Caroline Rutto, business development manager at, EABL and Jeruto Toromo, deputy study coordinator at AMPATH Centre.
