President Uhuru's children among thousands of revellers at Valentines Throwback Concert

The two members of the First Family enjoyed the show from the VVIP section of the audience, as popular 90s American R&B groups Blackstreet and Sisters With Voices (SWV) made their maiden performances in Kenya.

Local artistes Kavi Pratt and Atemi Oyungu curtain-raised at the concert, as American-based Kenyan DJ, DJ Fully Focus, took matters on the wheels of steel. Iconic Kenyan spin master DJ Adrian was also in the line-up to keep the music flowing.

SWV took to the stage at around 10.30pm and went on to thrill their fans for about two hours.

The trio (Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, Tamara “Taj” Johnson and Leanne “Lelee” Lyons) belted some of their most popular hits among them Can We, Weak, Right Here, I’m So Into You, When U Cry and Lose My Cool.

Dressed in all-white, boy group Blackstreet was the night’s cherry on the cake. Hitting the stage some minutes after midnight with their hit Don’t Leave Me, the quartet gave a killer performance. They performed among other hits No Digitty, Before I Let You Go, Buy Me Love, Joy and Booti Call. This was the first mega concert of 2017 and as expected, the visitors did not disappoint.

As early as 8pm, the masses had streamed in and as the clock hit 10pm, the curtain raisers were already on stage getting the atmosphere ready for the main event. President Uhuru Kenyatta’s son Jomo and his fiancée Achola were among hundreds of Kenyans who attended the Saturday night concert.

Also in attendance was the president’s daughter Ngina. Under heavy security, the president’s children partied the night out and at one point even got carried away — when Blackstreet belted to their Money Can’t Buy Me Love. Jomo even rose from his seat, visibly moved, and joined in song and dance as his girlfriend followed on.

There were many surprises on the night starting from when the Grammy award winning R&B group Blackstreet praised Kenyan boy band Sauti Sol, saying the Kenyan stars are one of the biggest music groups in the world.

“We know Sauti Sol. They are really great,” the band’s lead singer said, to wild cheers from the elated crowd.

At some point, the Valentine’s Throwback took a romantic turn when a man took to the stage, went down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend as the audience cheered him on. Peter Irachu was the man of the moment after he called out his girl Veronica Wamboi and then, with a ring, posed the magic question to: “Will you marry me?”

The beautiful lady, overwhelmed by the moment, accepted the ware offer as Maina Kageni, the MC of the night led the crowd into an animated applause. The two were gifted with a holiday courtesy of The Sarova hotels.

It wasn’t until midnight that the MC introduced the SWV trio who belted out their ballads that were mega hits in the 1990s.

Song after song, the ladies were in their element. Undoubtedly wowed by Kenyan men after the onstage proposal, the one time Grammy nominees went ahead to praise Kenyan men and also openly declared their love for Sauti Sol, the Kenyan group that Blackstreet had also recognised earlier in the night.

“We have been listening to Kenyan music and we have to say we have a crush on the fine Kenyan group Sauti sol,” said Coko before they performed their latest jam Man Crush Everyday.
