Senior Chief Joseph Odero of Suna East, Migori County who is in his 50s, says that in their days, they never got paternity leave and calls it a ‘modern excuse’.

According to him, the leave, “is an excuse because I am sure two out of 10 men don’t change diapers or feed the baby. Instead they lazy around the house”.

He adds that in his time, men bonded well with their newborns despite the absence of paternity leave.

“In fact, it was cowardly and unmanly to hang around a woman who has just given birth and is still bleeding.

Her sisters and in-laws care of her and teach her how to take care of the baby, while the man’s role was to provide for his family,” Chief Odero recalls, adding that paternity would be more practical if the new father works far from home.
