A little known private secondary school in Kayole is in the limelight after 10 of its students qualified to join university.
Brown Hill School started as a community based organisation (CBO) in 2012 — and has defied all odds to emerge among the best 2016 KCSE performers in Eastlands.
The school recorded three B plains, three B- and four C+, drawing praise from locals. Three girls are among those who will join university after attaining the C+ cut-off point.
Kennedy Otieno, one of its directors said, “Despite our meagre resources, we have sprung a surprise. Previously, the system had not favoured us, but this time round, there was no room for cheating by our competitors.”
He said that last year when only one student qualified to join university, some angry parents transferred their children to other schools.
He attributed the success to a level playing field thanks to the reforms initiated by Education CS Dr Fred Matiang’i. Forty three candidates sat exams in an extremely difficult environment in the school
