Chickens come home to roost as discrimination against boy child manifests itself in exam results

Counties

Legend has it that among the Kikuyu, there once was a female chief, Wangu Wa Makeri who sat on men ‘kama chapo’. Being a dictator, men had it rough under her reign. An ingenious scheme was hatched to dethrone her. The legend claims that men met secretly and crafted an MOU whose object was to impregnate all the women in leadership!

Those days, men were virile and had not been made impotent by illicit brews and substances like ‘Muguka’. The women ended up being in the family way. Incapacitated by the pregnancies, men easily chased them from leadership and the tyrannical era of Wangu Wa Makeri came to an end.

The release of the KCSE 2016 results coupled with recent happenings in the country have convinced Vasco Da Gama, Meta Meta’s history master, that women are on the warpath to reclaim that throne. He says there have been complains about discrimination against the boy child, but no one has been paying attention. He says chickens have now come home to roost.

While releasing the results, the cabinet secretary for education revealed that girls’ schools had performed better than those of boys. Alliance girls and Kenya High school were even singled out for special mention. Scenes of victorious school boys carrying their principals shoulder high and punching in the air while singing their schools’ anthems were hardly witnessed.

Many principals of boys’ schools that have traditionally performed well became ‘mteja’. Among the top twenty performers nationally, fourteen were girls. Chinua Achebe would have probably wondered; “when did the rains start beating the boy child?” Boys no longer seem interested in books.

Sampling illicit brews

They have converted them to fuels for dormitory fires. Times were when senior students prided in carrying ‘voluminous textbooks’ and even walked at ‘an academic angle’ –leaning towards the side heavy with books. Now, girls are ‘chewing’ books while their brothers are chewing ‘Muguka’ in addition to sampling the potency of various sight impairing illicit brews.

The boy child is indeed a threatened species. A senior trade unionist –in shock- even claimed that the marking schemes were tinkered with so as to favour female candidates. Vasco Da Gama further claims the poor performance by boys is as a result of decades of neglect of the boy child.

He further argues that most girls’ schools have ultra-modern dormitories while most boys make do with structures that resemble barns or cowpens.

He also feels that the affirmative action for girls in regard to university admissions should be reviewed. “Why should a girl from a performing national school be more advantaged in university admissions compared to a boy who has scored the same mark from a school in a slum like Kibera?” He wonders.

The empowered girl child is now riding roughshod over the boy child. In true Wangu Wa Makeri fashion, some men are getting serious beatings from their wives. Some have had their defective ‘transformers’ crudely cut off. Their wives consider them a nuisance and useless appendages to their bodies.

After all, they haven’t contributed to some warmth in the marital bed or helped in multiplying and filling the world as God commanded Adam and Eve to do. No wonder, columnist X. Iraki, recently proposed that women should be the ones paying dowry and running homes since men have become irresponsible!

Unfortunately, the girls are acquiring some bad manners from the boys and even beating them at their own game. The NYS mega corruption scandal is alleged to have been crafted by some two beauties. The pair ended up cat walking with millions in ‘gunia’s kama waru’, leaving seasoned hustlers green with envy.
