Marriage in disarray after Bomet hubby impregnates visiting sister-in-law

Counties

A woman in Bomet County got a rude shock after returning from her two-year studies, only to learn that her husband had put her sister in the family way.

The 28-year-old woman, only identified as Susan, had gone to college to pursue a two-year diploma course in teaching and left her 19-year-old sister to 'take care' of her husband and children.

The shocking news broke during a bash that the 34-year-old husband, surnamed Mabele, had thrown to celebrate his wife's graduation. A foul mood engulfed the party, as the embarrassed wife could not hold back her tears.

Reportedly, Mabele had encouraged Susan to go to college so as to supplement their family income in future. Besides, getting college training — or having a 'course', as they call it in rural areas — greatly boosts one's social image in their village.

However, the embattled wife had no one to blame but herself, or so it seems. "I blame myself for this situation. I am the one who invited her to my home," the woman is quoted as having lamented, after she rudely discovered that her sister was 'taking good care' of her husband, not just by cooking for him, but also serving him the other 'special food'.

Neighbours, who had all along suspected all was not okay, revealed that Mabele did not take long to appreciate — in kind — how his sister-in-law was taking good care of his children.

It, unfortunately, took the wife two years to discover, given she rarely came home from college. "I was only home for the holidays and during this time, my sister would go back to our parents. It never crossed my mind that there was something going on between the two," she is reported to have said.

With time, like any man and a woman who cares for him are wont, Mabele developed a special bond with his sister-in-law. The secret affair, however, would have gone unnoticed, had the young girl not fallen pregnant a few months to Mabele's wife's graduation.

During the party attended by Mabele's workmates, relatives, several friends and neighbours, the young girl kept crying and sobbing hysterically, as the rest were rejoicing by singing and dancing. This prompted an inquisitive neighbour to ask her why she was crying.

At first the girl kept quiet, but after more prodding, she spilled the beans. "Where will I go now that my sister is back? And here I am pregnant with Mabele's child?" she is quoted as having cried.

She then went on to explain what happened during her sister's absence, laying bare scandalous details of the secret affair. Mabele was in such in awkward position, seeing as this nasty news broke before people who have a lot of respect for him.

A neighbour told this writer that some of his furious in-laws began making threats of drastic action, lest the scandal disgraced their family. "An enraged uncle, suggested they take the wife a way and children and compel Mabele to visit family elders to show cause why he should not be punished and fined," said the neighbour who didn't want to be mentioned.

Those in attendance began mumbling as they discussed the scandal in hushed tones, prompting the bash to end unceremoniously.

It is not clearly known what next course of action will be taken, but sources in the family have ruled out abortion. "He might be forced to marry the sister-in-law as a second wife, pay for her dowry and others fines. But such a decision will be made by elders in consultation with the two women," said the neigbour.
