The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is defending its drivers who have been accused of careless driving.
Photographs doing round on social media of NTSA drivers speeding and overlapping dangerously akin to matatu drivers left many Nairobians in shock.
It is reported that the authority hired some 40 drivers after acquiring a new fleet of patrol cars earlier this year. There are however claims that some of those hired were former matatu drivers while some were fresh from driving schools.
NTSA Director General Francis Meja has denied the claims: “I am aware of photos circulating of some past incidences where our vehicles are involved in accidents. We have made clarification on the same. It is not true that we hired ex-PSV drivers,” Meja told The Nairobian.
On November 6, NTSA claimed that their car that veered off the road was avoiding collision with two lorries dangerously overtaking along Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
In another instance, their van was spotted overlapping, but the authority claims the driver stopped by the roadside to block overlapping motorists. “This enabled easy traffic flow in the area,” NTSA claimed.
The authority said they took disciplinary action against their driver captured overtaking on a continuous yellow line.
