They waited for their dead bishop to resurrect on the third day, like Jesus Christ, but members of a splinter church group in Migori County has since moved on after the miracle failed.
‘Baba’ as he was called, was found dead on his seat two weeks ago and, according to one of the faithful, “gone home (heaven) and would be back in a few days.”
Majority of his followers were, however, not keen to be drawn into discussing ‘Baba.’
The mood at the church compound in Opapo in Rongo where he was later buried remained somber even as a man in his 20s took over leadership claiming he was crowned by the deceased who often sat at the church altar all day and rarely went out until he died.
And when he did, his followers covered him with an umbrella to shield him from the sun.
At the altar, he was aided by two women who each sat on either side of him. The women held bowls in their hands where from time to time, ‘baba’ spat his much sought after kikohozi said to have healing powers.
The church compound and bishop’s home had been turned into a hospital cum mental asylum where the bewitched were kept for special prayers.
Indeed, men dressed in spiritual regalia were often seen cutting fences, maintaining the church compound and praying in three hours cycles from 6am to 3am.
An insider told The Nairobian that ‘Baba’ loved fish bought from female fishmongers. The women sent to fetch the fish were not allowed to hike lifts as they walked to and from Homa Bay town.
