Old school: The fire in the belly of Itierio Boys

Itierio grabbed the headlines in the most heated of ways when students at the school burnt seven of their 12 dorms after being denied permission to watch what later became a drab Euro 2016 football match between Croatia and Portugal.

This is the school that ignited the burning of dormitories in Kenya this June, with other schools following suit throughout the country.

Founded in 1948 by the Evangelical Lutheran Church along the Kisii-Migori highway in Suneka town, Itierio Boys’ mission was to “inculcate in the youth the virtues of hard work, honesty, determination, self-discipline and fear of God for adaptation in the society.”

The school motto, ‘Aim High,’ guided students in academics as well as sports, specifically soccer, whose golden era culminated in Itierio winning the 1987 national soccer title. Its sporty alumni include Mike Okoth Origi (father of Liverpool star Divock Origi), later Harambee Stars striker and who scored a goal for Itierio during their successful 1987 campaign.

Others in the golden team included Henry Motego, Salim Mabruk, Vincent Abuga, Evans Nyariki and Richard Otambo — who also turned up for Harambee Stars. The golden boys of Itierio, including Henry Nyandoro, also played for Kisii’s Shabana FC in the Super League. But this enviable pedestal was torched with the burning of dormitories, forcing the management to close it, besides culpable students facing arson charges.

Funny how this was the school that hosted the 2014 Kisii South Guidance and Counseling expo!
