It was a common sight, now sadly in the dusty realms of those who loved staring at the Citroen ‘frog’ shape cruise around Nairobi.
It was elongated in shape with the ubiquitous ‘hind legs’ slightly ‘submerged’ in the body of this French low-rider.
The beauty of Citroen chura, as Nairobians nicknamed it owing to its toady looks, was in seeing it squat like a frog when parked and lift itself up, slowly, when started.
Designed by Italian sculptor and industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni and French aeronautical engineer Andre Lefebvre, the Citroen DS with disc brakes had a head-turning aerodynamic body design comprising its low roof, strong shoulders and commanding chrome grilles. Its depressurised hydraulic engine system which accounted for its iconic slow sinking when at rest was the work of Paul Mages, giving the DS its self-levelling independent suspension.
Citroen chura came in station wagon, saloon and convertible body configurations, now a common sight at the annual Concours d’Elegance car show where petrol heads go to marvel at what was the most beautiful classic car design of its day.
