Kenya’s flag bearer at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Shehzana ‘Kuki’ Anwar, might have bowed out of the games minus a medal, but the Africa archery champion sure did give the sport some much-needed publicity in a country where any engagement outside athletics, soccer, rugby and at some point, cricket, is considered peripheral. Shehzana is a scion of the Anwars and sports runs in the family.

Azar Anwar: Famous rally driver is father of Shehzana Anwar. The three-time national safari rally champion in Kenya (1998, 2005 and 2006) and the 2009 Motorsport Personality of the Year, is a suspension engineer who also runs the Azar Anwar Motorsport School in Nairobi.

Tabassum Anwar: Mother of Shehzana Anwar, and President of Kenya Archery Association, an affiliate of the World Archery Association, went to the Rio Olympics as Shehzana’s coach and manager. The alumnus of Hounslow College, Brentside High UK, Class of 1981, took an interest in archery after her daughter showed aptitude in the sport 14 years ago. She has coached her to many championships including the 7th World Archery Games in Germany in 2005.

Shezan Anwar: Elder brother of Shehzana is Kenya’s seven-time quad bike and the Kenya Motocross champion.

Shehzana Anwar: The first Kenyan to take part in the Rio Games was also the first to bow out in the preliminary stages at the Sambódromo Range where she finished 62 out of 64 contestants. She became Kenya’s first archer flag bearer at the Olympics - the others were athletes, a boxer, swimmer and volleyballer.

She is the 2016 Africa champion after winning her individual event in Windhoek, Namibia, a gold in South Africa and the Archery World Cup in Antalya Turkey last June, where she ranked 18 hence moving up to 195 in the women’s standings from 213 serving as her Olympic build up.

The alumnus of Oshwal Academy and USIU (BA, psychology class of 2009) is a human resource professional and a qualified archery instructor with Shehzana Anwar Archery. In her free time, the right-handed shooter coaches archery at Strathmore University.

Asad Anwar: Shehzana’s uncle who is also a local rally driver since 1994. The alumnus of Upper Hill Secondary School is the CEO of Africa Ecosystems that deals in hospitality for professionals working in remote areas.
