Angie’s Den: Unbelievable, my ex is getting married

News

This past Monday I was determined to have a good day and an all-round good week. I woke up a little earlier than usual, said my morning prayer with more zeal than other days, promising that nothing and no one will rob me of my joy or sanity – not traffic, nor bosses nor my annoying colleague Greg. Yes.

All those motivational quotes shall manifest in my life today and I will remain a happy, non-complaining, law abiding citizen. Today is going to be a good day and this became my Monday mantra.

When I got to the office at 730 am I used the time to get some caffeine in my system and I decided to spare a few minutes to go through my social media page to see what’s going on in my friends lives.

And there he was. The first picture I saw staring back at me was that of my Ex. He was clinging his hands around the waist of an attractive woman. Covering half her face was her raised hand that displayed a gigantic diamond on her ring finger. The caption underneath read “I asked and she said yes!” Since it was last posted 12 hours ago, the post now has 207 likes, 88 comments and counting.

“Unbelievable”, Tanya my inner mean girl muttered, awakening from her temporary slumber obviously surprised by this unexpected news. I did what I know I shouldn’t do. I clicked on the picture and got a closer look at the newly engaged couple.

“Morning Sunshine, you’re here early!” Greg says as he walked through the door. I responded with a grunt and waved him off, his voice interrupting my thought process as I look at the comments below. Everyone was gushing and congratulating my Ex, saying how cute they look and bla bla bla. “You should call him, say congratulations...” said Tanya, suggesting that by doing so I would be displaying how I can be the bigger person. Except I didn’t want to make the call to convey my happiness for him. I wanted to call to find out how he was able to move on so quickly.

Just then, Tanya felt the need to give me a refresher course. “You broke up with him because you said he was a dreamer, remember? No drive, no ambition, he lacked all those things that you wanted in a partner? Do you remember?” Tanya repeated. For some reason though, I had very little recollection about why we broke up and for a split second I just wondered what it would have been like if we were still together. I also wondered why I didn’t unfriend him earlier and spare myself this agony.

“So what brings you to the office this early?” pried Greg as he popped his head next to my computer, totally intruding on my personal space. “Oh wow! Who’s the hottie? Is that your sister? Congrats!” Greg went on, oblivious to the fact I was feeling slightly violated.

And just like that, what started off as a good attempt to stay motivated on Monday turned into a day of wading off nosy colleagues, reminiscing about Ex’s and contemplating phone calls to stir up the old flame.
