The Kenyattas, Odingas are birds of a feather

Since independence, various local families have created political dynasties that have seen familiar surnames capturing political seats since grandfather’s time.

We are here talking of the Kenyattas, the Mois and the Odingas, in a cycle that has seen Uhuru become the fourth president. His father was the first president and worked with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Raila Odinga’s father, as his vice president before they differed.

Mzee Jaramogi went into the opposition, now under the grip of his son, Raila.

Both Uhuru and Raila worked together after the famous merger of Kanu and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) — which was led by Raila. But in the 2002 presidential elections, Raila went his own way, choosing to support Mwai Kibaki who vied in National Rainbow Coalition.

During the failed 2005 constitution referendum, Raila and Kenyatta were both together in the Orange camp, which worked hard to see the referendum fail. They would later break ranks ahead of the 2007 General Election after Uhuru decided to support retired president Mwai Kibaki’s re-election bid.

Since then, the two have been in opposing sides, especially after Uhuru clinched the presidency, which Raila contested but lost in the Supreme Court.

Another key family known for active and continued participation in national politics is that of retired President Daniel arap Moi, Kenya’s second president, whose name is still a force to reckon with in both the Senate and the National Assembly through his sons, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi (pictured) and Raymond Moi (Rongai MP). Another Moi’s son, Jonathan, has also been trying his luck for Eldama Ravine parliamentary seat.
