Woman falls out of favour with boyfriend’s mother after she criticises her cooking skills

Counties

Most men put a lot of premium on a woman’s ability to cook when vetting one for marriage. However, for a certain Koech, love seems to have blinded him so much that he never noticed that his live-in girlfriend named Kate, whom he plans to marry, is a big joke in the kitchen.

It was until she served her would-be mother-in-law poorly cooked food, prompting the poor woman to protest, that Koech got a reality check.

What had been expected to be a jovial ‘meet-my-people’ tour in Nyagacho, Kericho County turned gloomy after Koech’s mother disapproved on his girlfriend’s cooking skill, calling her a horrible cook.

Eager to make an impression and perhaps show off her cooking skills during a visit to her boyfriend’s rural home, Kate volunteered to prepare a meal for the family, much to the excitement of her mother-in-law to-be.

All was okay until when it was time to serve the meal that hell broke loose. That Kate had mixed more than enough foods together and made some weird combinations when serving angered Koech’s mother, causing her appetite to instantly take flight.

“I personally had no problem with the combinations and the quality of food. But my mother didn’t like it at all and she openly expressed her displeasure, creating a very awkward moment,” said Koech, defending his girlfriend. “She is a good cook, it’s only that she was put to task to cook for many people, yet she is only used to cooking small amounts for me,” he said.

Charm offensive

That she had ‘flooded’ the stew with soup didn’t make matters any better. “My goodness! What is this you’ve cooked, is this your first time in a kitchen?” Koech’s mother is said to have scoffed, loudly wondering if the same is what her son is always subjected to in Nairobi.

Koech who did not want to appear to be siding with either of them, watched helplessly as his mother gave his girlfriend a tongue lashing.

“This idea of lumping everything together in one pot at a go is a clear indication of how lazy you are. Why couldn’t you cook them separately? Especially now that I have so many cooking pots? Did you have to waste my ingredients?” the out-spoken mother is said to have quarreled.

The mother, who by Koech’s own admission is a perfectionist and stickler for good cooking, took a swipe at her son for overlooking his would-be wife’s pathetic cooking skills.

In her defense, Koech explained that besides his girlfriend’s cooking, she is a great woman, promising to encourage her to sharpen her cooking skills.

What was expected to be a great bonding session ended up being a low-key affair that left a bitter taste in the older woman’s mouth.Koech said upon returning to the city, his unhappy girlfriend has been moody, with her body language insinuating that she has lost enthusiasm for the relationship.

“I have now launched a charm offensive, in a bid to do some damage control and cool her down. She has been fussy, claiming that the criticism was not fair,” said Koech, claiming that he is determined to ensure things get back to normal.
