Mungiki still alive in bus stages and markets in Nakuru town

The group has been accused of extorting money from traders seeking stalls in the market and businesspeople who want to place their matatus on certain routes

Heightened Mungiki activities in Nakuru have always been witnessed just before and during the General Election.

With the 2017 polls beckoning, the county has witnessed activities pointing to a resurgence of the prohibited group at matatu stages and public markets, where they collect fees from traders and businesspeople.

The group has been accused of extorting money from traders seeking stalls in the market and businesspeople who want to place their matatus on certain routes.

Nakuru Street Traders and Hawkers Association chairman, Symon Nasieku, said that his members have been harassed by the gang. He said the gang members operate in small groups and are well-known within the security circles but nothing is being done.

In February this year, Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria and his Bahati counterpart Kimani Ngunjiri, complained to security agencies about the re-emergence of Mungiki.

According to the legislators, the criminal gang was becoming bolder in their extortion and demanded comprehensive investigations.

But their claims were rubbished by Nakuru County Police Commander Hassan Barua, who said they were not aware the gang was regrouping. But as the police boss denied such claims, Central Rift Regional Coordinator Wanyama Musiambo was reading from a different script.

According to the regional boss, progress has been made in investigations into reports of the re-emergence of the dreaded sect and police were gathering details of the networks.

He said intelligence reports have led the officers to the group’s cells and some people have recorded statements.

“I can assure everybody that we are not going to allow the regrouping and particularly at this moment when we are moving to the next General Election,” he said at a press conference.

In 2003, machete-wielding Mungiki members descended on Flamingo estate leading to the death of 11 people. A former MP was charged but later acquitted for being behind the illegal sect.
