Contrary to rumours that the just-crowned Miss Tourism Machakos is not from the region, Karen Nkatha is indeed from Machakos. Details presented by the event organisers to Pulse indicate that the beauty, whose full name is Karen Nkatha Muriithi, was born in 1995 in Nzauni, Machakos, where her family has been living.
"We can confirm that as much as her name doesn't sound Kamba, Karen is a Machakos County resident and she won the crown in a deserved manner. The issue of her getting dethroned does not arise," said Jillian Nzive, the director of Tourism.
"In fact, many of the girls who wanted to participate in the competition were from Nairobi. Most local girls shied away from the competition and Karen was just one of the few locals who were brave enough to enter the beauty pageant that she won, with all judges agreeing that she was the best contestant," she added.
Rules on Miss Tourism county editions are not clear as to who is "native enough" to participate.
