Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Laurent Kabila, has gifted each player of the Country’s national football team with a brand new luxurious car, after winning the African Nations Championship (Chan).
The 30-man squad that included 23 players and seven officials were each handed the four-wheel drive cars as appreciation for winning the competition that was held in Rwanda
According to the BBC, each of the cars cost around Sh6 million ($ 60,000). In total, it is said the Congolese president spent around Sh200 million to buy the fleet of cars.
The ceremony that took place at presidential palace also saw the players take home Sporting Merit medals. “May this trophy serve to forge peace and stability in our country,” said Kabila as quoted by AFP.
“We thank you for the warm welcome and gifts Mr President. The wonderful performance in Rwanda is as a result of the support from your government and the strong competition of our top-flight league,” Congo’s coach Florent Ibenge said.
DRC beat Mali 3-0 in a one-sided final to claim their second title in the past four editions.
