Royal couple meet Power couple

The two couples chatted warmly, with Jay Z placing a hand on William's shoulder at one point.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met the King and Queen of Brooklyn last night at an NBA basketball game.

William and Kate chatted with Jay Z and Beyonce as they watched Jay Z's team the Brooklyn Nets play the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Barclays stadium during their visit to New York.

The 18,000-strong crowd erupted into cheers as the Duke and Duchess appeared court side just after half time.

But they saved their loudest cheer for when Jay Z and Beyonce crossed the court for a chat with the royal couple.

As cameras crowded round them and beamed their meeting into the stadium, the two couples chatted warmly, with Jaz Z placing a hand on William's shoulder at one point.

Earlier the royal couple arrived at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn as hundreds of demonstrators outside staged a "die in", in protest at the deaths of Eric Garner and other black men at the hands of white policemen in the past few weeks.

Prince William couldn't resist picking up a basketball as he arrived to watch his first match tonight joking: "I think I should be spinning this on my finger."

Accompanied by his wife Kate wearing a grey coat by US designer Tory Burch, skinny jeans and heels, the six foot two royal also craned his neck to meet towering seven foot two inch NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo and remarked: "At last someone who is taller than me!"

The Brooklyn Nets were playing the Cleveland Cavaliers to mark a unique partnership between the National Basketball Association and the couple's Royal Foundation.

The NBA will support the charitable foundation's work with United For Wildlife and the Coach Core programme, which aims to encourage a new generation of sports coaches.

Dikembe Mutombo is a Congolese-born American now known for his humanitarian work.

He has become an ambassador for United for Wildlife.

After their brief photocall with the former professional player and senior executives from the NBA, the couple enjoyed a private dinner before heading courtside.
