Police in Naivasha are hunting for boda boda operators who torched a vehicle that was involved in an accident along North Lake road leaving one person dead.
Trouble started after a boda boda operator who was allegedly driving on the wrong side headed to Kasarani estate from Naivasha town, rammed an oncoming vehicle.
Infuriated by the incident the boda boda operators rushed to the scene and set the car ablaze.
James Kabono from Naivasha Road Safety Association, said cases of motorcycle operators attacking motorists involved in accidents were on the rise.
Kibono said many motorcyclists do not have driving licenses or insurance cover and some were minors who had dropped out of school.
“We had an incident where a group of boda boda operators from North Lake torched a car that was involved in an accident killing their colleagues,” he said.
“Police have launched a manhunt for those involved and it's time that these operators were taught a lesson on respecting the law and private property,” he added.
Meanwhile, a foot fisherman drowned in Lake Naivasha while on an illegal fishing mission.
The deceased in his mid-30s was fishing near Kamere landing beach when he slipped and fell into an underwater trench leading to his death.
Since the year began, over ten foot-fishermen have died in the lake while on illegal fishing missions either from drowning or hippo attacks.
Grace Nyambura from Lake Naivasha Network Group, said the number of illegal fishermen had increased leading to deaths.
“Over the weekend we lost another man to drowning and the numbers are worrying with young men who are seeking a meal for their families being the most affected,” she said.
Naivasha OCPD Antony Keter said they are pursuing boda boda operators who torched the vehicle while inquest files have been opened for the two incidents.
