Energy regulator rewards BAT for power saving techniques

Cigarette-maker BAT Kenya has been feted for its efficient use of energy at its Nairobi operations. The company has been awarded in recognition for its sustainable use of energy resources by complying with the Energy (Energy Management) Regulations, 2012. The certification was delivered by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

Speaking at the event in Nairobi, ERC Director General Joseph Ng'ang'a  said the regulations apply to facilities that consume more than 180,000 kilowatt-hours of power annually.

"We are proud that BAT has set the pace for peers in the medium and high-energy consumption sectors to comply with these regulations."

"The facilities that consume more than 180,000 kilowatt-hours of thermal energy per year are governed by these regulations."

He said the facilities complying with these regulations are expected to generate direct energy and financial savings, hence increased profits.

BAT has saved about 5.18 million KWh of electricity valued at Sh77.7 million and 466,907.96 litres of heavy fuel oil worth Sh40 million.

"The certificate is a clear indicator of the commitment of the facility to conserve and use energy efficiently and to comply with laws and regulations governing the energy sector," said Ng'ang’a.
