Settling down in new career? Orient yourself first

Kenya: You have just landed that career placement and you are raring to prove your worth. At first, you find the going awkward as you orient yourself to your new work environment. If this is your first career job, it’ll take quite a while adjusting.

If you moved from a different company, the pace of work and expectations may overwhelm you.

According to career experts, the first few months for new employees are uneasy. They overdo themselves in trying to impress and prove they’re good performers.

They have hardly known everybody in the departments let alone how the organisation’s runs.

Though proving oneself in a new job placement is not wrong, it pays to familiarise yourself in knowing everybody, how the company works, your roles and expectations and other details related to the company to get you a good start.

A Nakuru-based  Business Manager, Stephen Kamanu, says it is essential for one to know how things work, whom to rely on or align with and other administrative details.

Getting to know everybody earlier is very important. You get an insight how things work in a given company and how you may help,” he says, adding that this would pay later in your career.

Starting point

The better ways you can acquaint yourself with new workmates include going out for lunch or tea breaks with one or two workmates would be the starting point. “They may tell you how things are run and this would mark the beginning of a working relationship with them,” he says.

Other ways to acquaint yourself known is by introducing yourself in every department as a new employee. You may ask questions related to the company like how or why things are run in a particular way.

Some of these questions may seem awkward but it pays getting to know everybody and everything early on.

Mr Kamanu says this will help employees to be productive in their careers. It would be better than trying to impress and make blunders as you may not have been familiar with some company’s concepts.

Most employees starting in a career are passionate, fired up and likely brimming with hundreds of ideas they want to start working on. Usually, some of these ideas may prove costly in the long run.

You’ll need to prove yourself steadily and consistently through work and the set goals that you meet.
