NAKURU: A senior State official and her two relatives have been charged with the murder of her husband.

Lilian Jepchumba Keter, a senior human resource official at Rift Valley Water Service Board, her brother, Fredrick Koech and nephew, Daniel Mwaciru, yesterday appeared before High Court Judge Maureen Odera over the murder of Ronex Kipkemoi Keter two months ago.

The prosecution said Mr Kipkemoi was killed on April 16 at their home in Kiamunyi. After the charges were read out to the three, Justice Odera directed they be taken to a psychiatrist for mental assessment. They will appear in court on July 8 to plead to the charges.

"I direct that the three accused be remanded at Nakuru GK prison. They should also appear before a doctor to confirm if they can stand trial," Odera said.

Police statements alleged that Kipkemoi, who was an employee of Nakuru Water Sewerage and Sanitation Company, was attacked when he arrived at his house and died from the serious injuries he incurred.

The three allegedly attempted to cover up the murder by putting a power cable around his neck.

During the fateful night, the wife allegedly informed the police that the father of three arrived home very drunk and attempted to assault her and the kids but they escaped.

In her statement, Ms Jepchumba said upon their return, she found him lying on the floor with a white electricity cable around his neck and alerted the police.

However, a postmortem report prepared by the family doctor Antony Wainaina and Government pathologist Titus Ngulundu contradicted Jepchumba's earlier statement.

"Anterior in the neck and body with multiple bruises whose circumstance is to be thoroughly investigated," they said.
