To address the perennial problem of political violence, politicians should be banned from contesting for parliamentary seats from the communities they come from.
The case of Suna East MP Junet Mohammed is a perfect example that it is possible. Junet may not have relatives, clan or even members of his extended family in Suna East. He therefore does not play politics of 'my people' as is the case with a majority of our legislators.
A bill should be passed in Parliament to bar politicians from contesting for seats in their ethnic backgrounds. As long as politicians are assured of the sycophantic support their communities give, they will forever use their tongues loosely.
