Governor Peter Munya tears into Senator Kiraitu Murungi over projects

Meru Governor Peter Munya

Governor Peter Munya has defended himself against accusations that he has not brought about any tangible development in Meru County.

The governor said he had initiated development projects in various sectors and transformed lives in rural areas, adding that was why his political competitors wanted to stop his progress.

Recently, Senator Kiraitu Murungi, while announcing his bid to dislodge Munya from the governor's position, said the residents had not seen any tangible development and accused Munya of gross misappropriation of resources.

But speaking on Saturday at Kangeta, where he announced the elevation of the Kangeta Health Centre into a sub-district Hospital, Munya said ongoing development projects in all the 45 wards in the county were a testimony that his administration was working and deserved a second term.

Munya said his administration had provided beds, doctors and medicine to ensure patients do not have to travel far to get treatment.

He also asked Kiraitu to concentrate on his Senate duties.

"He (Kiraitu) is not my supervisor. He should tell residents how much development funds he has brought to the county for three years. He is also a political player, so he cannot supervise me. It seems he wants to play all the roles," Munya said.

Munya said his main problem with Kiraitu, once a close ally, was the senator's decision to dissolve the Alliance Party of Kenya (Bus Party), because it robbed Meru of a bargaining tool for economic and political welfare.

Accompanied by seven MCAs, the governor also inspected the new Kangeta market and launched a project to upgrade 35kms of road.

"We have bought 20 road graders and hired 20 dozers that we are using to upgrade roads. We want to open more new roads in rural areas," said Munya, who was accompanied by Executives Newton Itobi (Roads), William Muraah (Health), Mary Mwiti (Water) and Joy Muriungi (Youth).

Munya also dismissed Kiraitu's claim that he won't run for Presidency in 2022.

"Meru is capable of producing Kenya's President, because we cannot be fetching water and firewood for others all the time. The old Kiraitu generation will have to retire in 2017 and let my generation take over," Munya said.
