Plans to build Sh75m MCA’s club opposed

Nyeri County Assembly in session

Plans by the Nyeri County Assembly to build a luxurious health club have been opposed by some MCAs.

The objection came as the public expressed displeasure over the project, saying the money should be channeled to development projects.

The MCAs led by Wamagana Ward Rep Jesse Kamuri said the advertisement of the tender to set up the health club would be cancelled because it was not a priority for the county.

“Members have consulted and decided that the tender advertisement must be cancelled and the project put on hold to concentrate on other development projects that will benefit residents,” Mr Kamuri said.

ADVANCED STAGE

The plans, which are at an advanced stage, angered the residents, who have questioned the rationale behind prioritising the project.

According to the tender documents, MCAs would have been pampered with various therapy services.

It was envisaged that the facility that would cost over Sh50 million would come with gym equipment, a steam bath and sauna.

Interested contractors had also been asked to tender for electrical installation and plumbing works.

Since the placement of the advert in the local dailies, residents have been up in arms against it.

Activist Eric Makara said the money should be used to refurbish Ruring’u Stadium to benefit more residents in the county.

County Clerk Jenard Mwiggeh yesterday said the tender had been closed.
