Court wades into row over proposed Bomet university land

Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto

The planned construction of a public university in Bomet has encountered yet another hurdle.

This is after the High Court in Bomet allowed the county government to continue dumping solid waste on the disputed parcel of land.

Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has been at loggerheads with the Government for the last two years after the 44-acre-parcel of land was earmarked for proposed construction of the Sh500 million university.

Two weeks ago, the county government moved to court seeking permission to continue dumping garbage on the disputed land.

Governor Ruto’s administration argued before the court that the land earmarked for the university was its only dumping site was not available for allocation to the university.

They further claimed garbage collection in Silibwet, Tenwek, Kapkwen and Bomet towns had been affected following the alleged allocation of the land to Moi University.

The university has, however, opposed the case filed by the county government and told the court the national government had issued a letter of allotment to the institution.

But Justice Martin Muya granted the county their prayer on dumping of solid waste.

The court also gave a three-week window for an out-of-court settlement on the dispute.

He asked the parties to report on the decision reached on May 23.
